Stockholm Takes on Tranås in 2009 Swedish Finals

Defending champs Stockholm will be playing this year’s Swedish Elite Division winners Tranås in the 2009 Swedish baseball finals August 29-30.

Stockholm, which finished in second place this year, beat last year’s co-finalist Karlskoga at home in two straight games in the best of three semi-finals Saturday, 5-2 and 7-4.

Tranås split Saturday’s semis with Leksand, losing the first game 4-3, but storming back in game 2 11-3. In Sunday’s decider, Leksand led 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th, when Tranås tied the score. Tranås went on to win a finals spot with a run in the 14th inning, making the final score 6-5.

This coming weekend’s finals will be played in Tranås, since they took first place in league play, with two games on Saturday, and a third, if necessary, on Sunday.

Finland won the 2007 Nordic Baseball Championships, going undefeated against Norway and the Swedish Juniors.

Norway and the Swedish Juniors split (their only wins), but since Sweden scored fewer runs against Norway than Norway against Sweden, under the tournament rules Norway finished second.

Norway lost both of its games Sunday, losing to Finland 13-3, and going down to Sweden 8-4.

Mattias Stenis (left) threw a perfect game as Rättvik defeated Alby 10-0 May 1 in a 7 inning Swedish Cup game.

According to the Swedish Baseball Federation website, Stenis threw 12
strike-outs as the Division 1 team beat last year’s Elite Division last
place finisher in the third round of the cup. It was Stenis’ first official game
for Rättvik since they won the Swedish championship in 2002.

A former Swedish national team pitcher, in 2004 Stenis pitched for neighboring Leksand but only threw 4 2/3
innings. Last year, as Leksand finished runner-up in the Swedish
championships, Stenis had an ERA of 2.85 over 60 innings and a 5-3
record.

In another third round game Elite Division Stockholm
followed up its doubleheader loss in the first weekend of the new
season with a 9-5 victory over lower divsion local rival City. Stockholm advances to the  quarter finals in the Cup, meeting last year’s Swedish champions  Sundbyberg on June 6.

The two teams will face off before that in regular Elite
Division play, at Sundbyberg on May 5.

Stockholm opens its 2007 season Saturday with a doubleheader against visiting Karlskoga. But the new lighting at the Skarpnäck field is still not quite in place.

According to a post on the Stockholm website, the lights will be ready by August 1, while it will be another three weeks before the fences and some other areas are finished. However. the piles of dirt around the warning track should be cleared away by the weekend.

The batting cage will be restored, but will be shortened for the time being, as will the bullpens.
